Description

No. 20 Regent Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with storage above. It was built between 1814 and 1836 and has undergone later additions and alterations, including the installation of a shop front. The building is constructed from reddish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and features a cast-iron balcony.

The exterior consists of three storeys with an attic and three first-floor windows. On the first floor, there is a blind opening and two 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has a blind opening and two 3/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals. The building has a cornice and a low parapet. The ground floor features a plinth and a central entrance with a part-glazed door topped by a basket-arched overlight, which has panelled reveals and a frieze. To the left, there is a blocked double entrance with part-glazed doors and an overlight with glazing bars. The ground floor also includes seven tall basket-arched windows, a frieze, and a dentil cornice.

The left facade has a first-floor 8-pane French window with margin-lights and a divided overlight, while the second floor contains a 3/6 sash window. The ground floor has a projecting shop front with irregular glazing. The roof is half-hipped with a stack at the right end. Additionally, the left facade features a balcony on the first floor with an oval motif.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Regent Street was originally known as Cross Street and was laid out between 1808 and 1814, with the first houses in the terrace development dating from 1814. The building occupies a corner site with Portland Street and is part of an architectural group that includes No. 18 Regent Street and Nos 22-38 (even) Portland Street.
