Description
Numbers 7 and 9, along with the attached railings, are a pair of houses dating to circa 1832, with later additions and alterations. They are located on the corner of Dale Street and Regent Street in Royal Leamington Spa. The construction is primarily pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, and they feature a concealed roof and cast-iron balcony and railings.
The architectural style is Late Classical. The exterior presents four storeys with five first-floor openings arranged in a 2:3 configuration; the fourth opening is blind on the first, second, and third floors. Stucco detailing includes a moulded first-floor sill band, Ionic pilasters rising through the first and second floors, a crowning frieze, and a cornice. The ground, first, and second-floor windows are 6/6 sashes with margin lights, set within tooled surrounds. The entrances, located centrally and to the left, have panelled doors with overlights containing glazing-bars, set within Tuscan pilastered surrounds topped with a frieze and cornice. The third floor has 3/6 sashes with margin lights, with a central raised upshot above. To the left is a ball finial and an off-centre stack.
The right return to Regent Street echoes the front facade, with a four-storey, basement structure and five first-floor windows. The moulded sill band and Ionic pilasters continue from the front elevation, along with the frieze and cornice. The windows on this return generally mirror those on the front, with 6/6 sashes on the upper floors and sills on the ground and first floors. The third floor features 3/6 sashes with margin lights, sills, and tooled architraves. The entrances to each house are accessed via three roll-edged steps; No. 7 features a 2-fielded-panel door with overlight, while No. 9 has a 2-panel door with a roll-moulded lower panel and overlight. A part-glazed door and casement window are present in the basement of No. 7, and a 3/6 sash is found in the basement of No. 9. A balcony adorns the first floor, and the second window on the Regent Street facade incorporates a Greek key motif.
The interior was not inspected during the historical assessment. Associated area railings, including a gate, and the side steps of No. 9 feature fleur-de-lys finials.
Dale Street was laid out circa 1832, and the east side was built by 1834. The buildings occupy an important corner site.
