Description
A pair of houses, later converted into a house and flats, dating from around 1832, with subsequent additions and alterations. The exterior is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, topped by a Welsh slate roof, and features a cast-iron verandah and railings.
The houses are three storeys high with a basement and attics, arranged over four bays in a 2:2 configuration, with deeply recessed entrances on either side; the entrance on the left is single-storey, while the one on the right spans two storeys. The stucco detailing includes pilasters with horizontal rustication at the outer ends of the ground floor, complemented by pilasters with recessed panels on the first and second floors. The first floor has four plate-glass French windows, each with a divided overlight. To the right of the recessed entrance is a 3/6 sash window. The second floor features four 6/6 sash windows, each with tooled architraves and sills. There's a decorative frieze and cornice, culminating in a blocking course.
The entrance to the left recess has a step leading to a part-glazed, five-panel door with a matching overlight, all within a plain pilastered doorcase, topped with a frieze and cornice. The right-hand entrance has three roll-edged steps to a part-glazed door with an overlight, within a pilastered surround, also accentuated by a frieze and cornice. Other windows include four 6/6 sashes with tooled surrounds and sills. All windows have plain reveals. The basement has two 4/8 sashes and two casement windows. Attic dormers are visible. The property has central and rear stacks. The returns display mainly blind openings. A continuous verandah runs along the first floor, adorned with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif and circle motifs on the struts, and covered with an asphalt roof.
The interior retains original joinery, including shutters on some windows. The attached gate and area railings to number 31 feature ornamental finials, and the end posts are topped with anthemion finials.
Dale Street was laid out around 1832, with the east side completed by 1834.
