Description

No. 39, Dale Street is a house dating to circa 1832, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, has a Welsh slate roof, and features cast-iron balconies.

The house is three storeys high with three first-floor windows, and a deeply-recessed bay to the left. The first floor has two 6/6 sash windows with moulded surrounds and sills, and a tall 3/6 sash with a moulded surround and a blind box. The second floor has two 3/6 sashes, a blind opening, all within moulded surrounds and with sills. A cornice and blocking course are also present. The ground floor has four steps leading to a central entrance with a part-glazed door, the lower panel roll-moulded, with a divided overlight within a projecting porch of two Doric columns, a plain frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The canted bay windows have 2/2 sashes above 1/1 sashes, with modillion cornices. A small 6-light casement is recessed to the left on the ground floor. All windows have plain reveals. The roof is hipped to the right, and off-centre side and rear stacks are present. A balcony with a double-rod-and-anthemion motif is situated above the right-hand first-floor window.

The return to Portland Place East is also three storeys high, with two first-floor windows. The first floor has two tall 6/9 sash windows with moulded surrounds and blind boxes and a fixed 9-light window and a 3/6 sash with moulded surrounds and sills. The ground floor has 6/6 sashes with sills. All windows have plain reveals. Individual balconies with a double-rod-and-anthemion motif are located above each first-floor window.

The interiors have not been inspected. Dale Street was laid out circa 1832, and the east side was built by 1834. The house occupies a corner site with Portland Place.
