Description
No. 53 Botanic Road is a house that has been altered for use as a shop and is now a private dwelling. It is dated 1806 at the first floor. The building is constructed of red brick in English Garden wall bond, consisting of five plus one courses, and features a slate roof. The layout is double-depth and double-fronted, with a small extension at the back.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a two-window range, which was formerly symmetrical. The ground floor includes a round-headed doorway with an open-pedimented architrave, a three-panel door, and a plain fanlight. To the left, there is an inserted 19th-century shop window and doorway featuring a part-glazed door and a rectangular plate-glass window beneath a plain fascia with a cornice. To the right, there is a two-over-two sash window with a raised sill and wedge lintel. The first floor has two similar windows and a quatrefoil datestone in the centre, inscribed with "B/MA/1806." The building has gable chimneys.
The property forms a group with No. 55 and No. 57 adjoining to the right, and with Nos. 56-62 and Nos. 68-86 opposite.
