Description
No. 44 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from around 1820 to 1840, with later additions and alterations including a mid-19th century shop front on the ground floor. The building is constructed of stucco over brick and features a concealed roof.
It stands three storeys tall and has one window on the first floor. Both the first and second floors have tripartite windows with a 6/6 sash window flanked by 2/2 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The low coped parapet adds to the building's character. The ground floor shop front features turned mullions with decorative caps and lotus feet, and has plate-glass windows that angle towards a central renewed glazed door with an overlight. The rear of the building retains 6/6 sash windows.
Inside, the property preserves original joinery, including panelled shutters. No. 44 is part of a well-preserved terrace of mid-19th century shops, which includes Nos. 38, 40, and 42, as well as No. 46. This terrace contributes to the visual appeal of the listed buildings along London Road, an important approach to Cheltenham.
