Description

The Old Swan Inn is an inn dating from circa 1810 to 1820, with later additions and alterations, including a rear extension added in the 1980s that is not part of the listed building. It was recorded as trading by 1820 and is shown on the Post Office Map of that year. The construction is stucco over brick, with a concealed roof and stacks. Wrought-iron window guards are present.

The exterior is three storeys high with three windows on the first floor. Stucco detailing includes rustication on the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs that frame the windows and carriage arch. A first-floor band is surmounted by four Doric pilasters, featuring incised decoration. Further incised lines define the first-floor windows, while an incised 'Greek key' motif borders the second-floor windows. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, the second floor 3/3 sashes, and the ground floor 1/1 sashes, all set in plain reveals; the ground-floor windows are within cambered-arched recesses. The off-centre left entrance has a six-panel door with an overlight. A carriage arch now features double, partially glazed doors within an elliptically-arched surround. A band and blocking course with copings is present, although the cornices are missing. A right return features both 6/6 and 8/8 sash windows.

The interior of the inn was not inspected as part of the listing process.

Subsidiary features include first-floor trellis window guards, also present on the return elevation. The inn is shown on Merrett's 1834 Map as the Old Swan Inn.
