Description
51 and 53 High Street is a house that has been converted into two shops, built around 1830 to 1850 with later additions and alterations, including a ground-floor shop front from around 1900. The building is made of stucco over brick and features a concealed roof with an iron balustrade.
It has three storeys and three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes tooled architraves around the windows and second-floor sills that rest on feet. The first floor has outer one-over-one sash windows flanking a tripartite window with one-over-one sashes, while the second floor has four one-over-one sashes. All the sashes are horned with plain reveals. The building is topped with a cornice and a low, coped parapet.
On the ground floor, there is a continuous frontage that includes an entrance to a passage on the left, a plank door, and two plate-glass windows set on brick plinths. These windows are canted towards off-centre left entrances with glazed doors and lower raised and fielded panels. The ends of the ground floor feature pilasters and slender columnette-mullions, along with a stained glass frieze above the windows in a basket-arched surround, and a continuous frieze with a blind box.
The interior has not been inspected. The building also has a continuous ornate balustrade above the ground floor and forms a group with Nos 55 and 57, The Restoration Inn.
