Description
Numbers 18 to 24 Grosvenor Street form a terrace of four houses with attached area railings to number 18, built around 1810 to 1830. The houses are constructed of stucco over brick, with a concealed roof. They feature cast-iron and wrought-iron railings, gates, and balconies.
The terrace is four stories high with a basement, presenting nine first-floor windows arranged in a 3:2:2:2 layout. Bands mark the first and second floors; the second-floor band is located only on the left-hand house (number 18). A cornice and blocking course with copings cap the facade. The ground, first, and second floors have 6/6 sash windows; the first-floor windows are taller, and the left-hand house's second floor has blind central openings. The basement windows are 6/6, 3/6, and 2/2 sashes.
The entrances on the left side of each property have flights of steps leading to six-fielded-panel doors, each with a decorative frieze and fanlight. Fanlight glazing varies: number 18 features a batwing design, number 22 a sunburst, and the others are plain.
The details of the interior have not been recorded.
The area railings and basement gates incorporate urn finials to the stanchions. First-floor balconies are featured on numbers 18 and 22; number 18’s have an enriched rod motif with a lattice frieze, while number 22's present embellished round-arched arcades.
Historically, the terrace was known as Gyde's Terrace as shown on Merrett's Map of 1834.
