Description
Numbers 45, 47, and 49 Grosvenor Street form a terrace of three houses, with attached area railings to the left of number 49. The houses date from around 1820 to 1850, with later additions and alterations including a 19th-century porch. They are built with stucco over brick, with brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks, iron balconies, and railings.
The design is symmetrical, featuring a central breakforward topped with a pediment. The exterior has two- and three-bay facades to the first floor. Stucco detailing includes pilasters at the ends and on the breakforward, horizontal acroteria to the ground floor and honeysuckle acroteria to the pediment. The windows are mostly 6/6 sash windows, with some 1/1 sashes with margin lights on the ground floor. The central and inner side entrances have six-fielded-panel doors; the left door is part-glazed, while the outer doors have lattice glazing in their overlights. The central entrance is within a porch supported by Doric pilasters, with sidelights and overlight. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
Subsidiary features include a continuous first-floor balcony to the two houses on the right, featuring an oval motif with scrolled panels, and similar individual balconies to the right. There are stick area railings attached to the left. Historical records indicate that Grosvenor Street was shown as Gyde's Terrace on a map from 1834.
