Description

Aldridge House (number 79) and the attached railings to numbers 77 and 11, along with the attached railings to Grosvenor Place South, form a terrace of three houses. They were likely built between 1820 and 1850, with subsequent additions and alterations. The construction is stucco over brick, with concealed roof, brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks, and wrought iron balconies and railings.

The houses are two storeys with attics, and have a basement to the right return. They feature three first-floor windows, with a breakforward to the right. Architectural details include banded rustication on the ground floor, a first-floor sill band topped by paired end Doric pilasters, and a frieze and first-floor cornice between the windows. Further pilasters are incorporated into the attic cornice. First-floor windows are mostly 6/6 sash windows; the attics have mostly 3/3 sash windows, all within simple reveals. The ground floor windows are tripartite sashes, with 6/6 panes between two 2/2 panes within cambered arched surrounds with voussoirs to the head.

The front door of number 79 is a three-panel door with an overlight containing margin lights. Number 77 has a late 20th-century door. Number 11, to the right return, features a flight of steps leading to the central entrance, with a boarded door and overlight with margin lights. The right return has three windows, and continues the stucco detailing from the front facade with similar fenestration.

The interior of the property was not inspected.

Number 79 has individual balconies to the ground, first, and second-floor windows. The ground-floor balcony has a central roundel, the first-floor balcony a quatrefoil, and the second-floor balcony embellished sticks and a central scroll. The railings have a wreathed handrail to the sides of the steps, with embellished stick balusters to the left and lancet railings to the right. Number 77 has stick balusters to the sides of the steps, with embellished balusters to the left, and scrolled lozenge detailing to the area railings. The right return (number 11) has reset spearhead railings.
