Description

3 Sherbourne Place is a terraced cottage dating from circa 1818. It is constructed with stucco over brickwork and has a low-pitched slate roof. The exterior is two storeys high with two first-floor windows, which are 2/2 sash windows. A central half-glazed door is set within a bracketed wooden gabled head, featuring a fretted bargeboard. The interior's significance lies in the survival of contemporary wall paintings. In the front ground-floor room, above the fireplace, is a version of the Montpellier Rotunda dated 1822, depicting a Pantheon-type dome similar to the one that was executed. An unidentified villa with a thermal lunette in the pedimented central gable is painted in an alcove by the chimney breast. These murals are a surprising survival and provide valuable insight into a variant design for the Montpellier Spa.
