Description

This is a terrace of three houses at numbers 45, 47, and 49 Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham, dating to around 1820. The property has undergone alterations, including a late 19th-century shop front to the central house and, more recently, 1970s shop fronts that lack architectural significance. The construction is ashlar facing brick, with a concealed double-pitch roof and brick and stucco party-wall stacks. A wrought-iron balcony is also present. The building follows a double-depth plan, featuring side stairways and full-height service ranges at the rear.

The exterior is three storeys high, with six first-floor windows per house. Ashlar detailing includes a channelled band at the second floor, a frieze, a cornice above the second floor, a crowning frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course with copings. The first floor windows are 6/6 sashes, taller than those on the second floor which are 3/3 sashes. All windows are in plain reveals, with sills. The central shop front features plate-glass windows with slender modillions, curving into an off-centre doorway with a part-glazed door and oval panel. The shop front to the left is plate glass, and that to the right is tiled. At the rear, windows retain their original 6/6 and 3/3 sashes, those in number 45 having flat brick arches.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters to the windows, although the interior was not fully inspected. A continuous balcony to the first floor of the right-hand house exhibits a lattice motif with panels of scroll ornament. The property was depicted on Merrett’s Map of Cheltenham from 1834.
