Description
The Central Hotel, originally two houses, dates from around 1820 to 1850 and is located on Portland Street in Cheltenham. The building is constructed of stucco over brick, topped with a slate roof and featuring brick end stacks, along with wrought-iron balconies.
The hotel stands three storeys tall, although No. 9 is slightly lower. It has seven first-floor windows arranged in a 3:4 pattern. There is a first-floor band on the right side of the building. The windows include original 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has 4/4 sash windows. The entrances are located in the 2nd and 6th bays, featuring glazed doors from around 1980, with fanlights above. The left door is blind, while the right door has batwing and circle type glazing along with a lattice frieze. The building is topped with crowning friezes and a cornice on the right side.
Inside, the hotel retains original joinery, including panelled shutters and a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail on the right. Original plasterwork is also present on the right side, although the rest of the interior was not inspected.
The first-floor balconies feature decorative motifs, with a rod and circle design on the left and a Canterbury Bell motif with elaborate circular scroll and bell panels on the right.
