Description

The terrace at 1, 2 and 3 Gloucester Place comprises three houses, now a shop and office, built between 1806 and 1820. The construction is stucco over brick with concealed roofs and tall brick stacks at the ends of the left-hand houses (Nos. 2 and 3). Iron porches and balconies are also present. The building is three storeys tall with a basement on the right-hand side, displaying eight first-floor windows arranged in a 3:3:2 pattern. Stucco detailing includes first-floor bands to the left and right, a second-floor band, and a crowning cornice to the right. Most windows are original 6/6 sash windows, with taller windows on the first floor to the right, set in plain reveals with sills. Central entrances are present to the two houses on the left; the centre door is panelled with six flush panels and a fanlight, the door to the right has six raised and fielded panels with a fanlight, and a plank door is located to the left. There are blocking courses with copings.

The interiors retain original joinery, including panelled shutters to the windows. The porches to the two houses on the left and the centre house feature scrolled lozenge and anthemion motifs on the uprights and tent roofs, while the porch to the right has a scrolled heart motif and openwork frieze. First-floor balconies have lattice motifs; the house on the right (No. 1) has a central scrolled panel, and the centre house (No. 2) has three balconies with a rod-circle-and-scroll motif.

Historical records indicate that the window guards at No. 2 are comparable to those found at other addresses in Cheltenham, such as 103 and 105 London Road and 4, 6, and 8 Montpellier Spa Road. Variations of the design are present on earlier roads in the Cheltenham new town.
