Description
Numbers 21, 23, and 25, along with the attached low wall between numbers 23 and 25, and the railings to number 25, are three houses, now flats, dating from circa 1820 to 1834. The construction is brick over stucco, with slate roofs and brick and stucco end stacks. Wrought-iron railings are also present.
The exterior features three storeys over basements, with three first-floor windows to each house, and a two-storey, single-window range to the left. Rustication is applied to the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs above the doors. A first-floor band is present, and the houses to the left have first-floor sills on corbels, with a second-floor band above. The original windows are mostly 6/6 sashes, taller to the ground and first floors, with some 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes. The basement windows are 6/6 sashes. The entrances, located to the right, left, and right, feature 5- and 6-fielded-panel doors with sidelights and basket-arched overlights with glazing bars.
Internally, original joinery is retained, including panelled shutters. The structure of the interior was not inspected further.
Subsidiary features include stick area railings to the left. Number 23 has first-floor balusters with embellished rods and a lattice frieze with central scrolled panels.
Historically, Grosvenor Street appears on Merrett’s Map of 1834 as Gyde’s Terrace.
