Description

The Vineyard and Churchside are two villas, originally a single house, built around 1820-34. They are located on Berkeley Street, Cheltenham, and were shown on a map of 1834 but not an earlier one from 1820. The building is constructed of brick with a plastered facade and a slate roof.

The exterior presents two storeys and three bays, with the two outer bays projecting as full-height bows. Detailing includes a plinth, a band at first-floor level, a decorative frieze, cornice, and a capping course. The central entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight, set within a fluted architrave and a doorcase with Doric pilasters, a dentil frieze and cornice. The ground floor has tripartite windows with 1/1 sashes. The first floor has tripartite windows to the bows, with 8/8 sashes flanked by 2/2 sashes, all curved in section. The central first-floor window is a 6/6 sash. All windows are set within tooled architraves. A 6/6 staircase sash with radial glazing to the head and margin lights is found on the rear elevation.

Interior photographs taken around 1990 show a south-east room with embellished architraves to doorways and cornices, incorporating a frieze with palm leaf motifs. Original joinery includes panelled shutters to some windows; the remainder of the interior was not inspected.
