Description
Berkeley Lawn is a villa dating from circa 1820 to 1834, appearing on Merrett’s Map of 1834 but not on the Post Office Map of 1820. The villa is constructed of brick with stucco facades and has a slate roof, featuring a cast- and wrought-iron balcony.
Externally, it is a three-storey building with three windows on the first floor. The central section projects slightly, and features a frieze, cornice, blocking course, and a central rear stack. The ground floor has two outer doorways with fanlights, the doorway on the right now partially blocked by a casement window, and the doorway on the left containing six-fielded-panel double doors. A central tripartite window has a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes, recessed under the first-floor balcony. The first floor has a central tripartite window with a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes, and outer 6/6 sashes. The second floor has two 6/6 sashes, alongside a blind window. The basement has 6/6 between 2/2 sashes. All windows are in plain reveals.
Internally, original joinery remains, including panelled shutters, though the rest of the interior was not inspected.
A first-floor verandah has a balustrade with a distinctive design of curved quarterings within square shapes, characteristic of circa 1820, and double scrolls to the uprights.
