Description
A pair of houses with attached railings to number 2, dating from approximately 1820 to 1834. They were not shown on the Post Office Map of 1820, but appear on Merrett’s Map of 1834. The construction is stucco over brick, with a slate roof and a brick and stucco party-wall stack.
The houses are three storeys high with a basement, and feature six first-floor windows (three per house). Stucco detailing includes ground floor rustication, drawn into voussoirs over openings, first- and second-floor bands, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are mostly 6/6 sashes, with the first-floor windows being taller and set in tooled architraves. All windows are in plain reveals. The entrances are located to the left of each house, featuring 5-panel doors between side-lights, topped with cambered-arched fanlights; the fanlight to the right has a batwing-and-circle motif in the glazing bars. The rear of the property retains various sash windows, including 6/6, 8/8, and 6/6 windows with margin-lights.
The interiors retain original joinery, including shutters. A Carron Company balcony, with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif, is located on the first floor to the right of number 2. The area railings to number 2 are in an X-motif, with stick balusters to the basement steps. The buildings form an irregular terrace with numbers 3 and 4, Berkeley Street.
