Description

Number 4 is a terraced house dating to approximately 1820-34. It’s shown on Merrett’s Map of 1834, but not on the Post Office Map of 1820, and was subsequently altered, including the addition of a range to the rear and a small lean-to extension to the right return. The house is constructed of brick with a plastered facade and a slate roof, featuring a stucco stack to the left and an iron balcony.

The 3-storey house with basement has three windows to the first floor. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, and a first-floor band topped by three Tuscan pilasters that extend through the first and second floors between the windows and to the right end. These pilasters are topped by an architrave, frieze, cornice and blocking course. The windows are mostly original 6/6 sashes, taller to the first floor, and set within tooled architraves with cornices. The entrance is a 3-panel door, flanked by pilaster strips, brackets, a frieze, and side-lights with a cambered-arched fanlight featuring decorative glazing.

The right return includes a first-floor band topped by paired Tuscan pilasters, a frieze, cornice and blocking course. A full-height bow window spans the main floors, with a tripartite window featuring 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes, and an 8/8 sash, all curved on section. Other openings are blind, the first-floor opening being in a tooled architrave. The interior has not been inspected.

The continuous balcony running along the first floor facade features the Carron Company’s heart-and-anthemion motif along with a band of scrolls. Number 4 forms an irregular terrace with numbers 1 and 2 and 3 Berkeley Street.
