Description

Numbers 37 and 39 Prestbury Road are a pair of attached terraced houses dating to approximately 1820-1834, as shown on Merrett’s Map of 1834. They are constructed with stucco over brick, and have a mock slate roof with four tall brick and stucco stacks on the left end and party wall. The attached iron area railings are also included in the listing.

The houses are two storeys high with a basement, featuring six windows on the first floor. The stucco detailing includes three incised lines dividing the ground and first floors, as well as a crowning frieze, cornice and blocking course. The windows are 6/6 sashes, largely original, set in plain reveals with sills. The entrances on the right side of the building have flights of seven roll-edged steps leading to a five-panel door (left) and a part-glazed door (right). The left door has a fanlight with a batwing and circle design. A basement entrance was added around 1980, featuring a glazed door.

At the rear, Number 39 has a full-height bow with a curved 6/6 sash window on the first floor, and an 8-pane French window with margin lights and sidelights on the ground floor, also curved. There's also a round-arched staircase window, now fitted with a casement. Number 37 has standard 6/6 sashes. The right return, overlooking Albert Place, has two first-floor windows; the stucco detailing continues from the main facade. A canted bay window is present on the ground floor with 1/1 sashes, while the first floor has a blind opening and 6/6 sash.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters to some windows. The railings to the sides of the steps and areas, with gates, consist of two levels of arrowhead bars and dogbars, finished with anthemion finials to the stanchions. The houses form a group with Numbers 41 and 43, Prestbury Road, and Number 2 Albert Place.
