Description

NUMBER 6 AND ATTACHED AREA RAILINGS

A terraced house and attached railings, built around 1827 and likely laid out for Joseph Hughes. The house is constructed with stucco over brick, featuring a concealed roof, a brick stack on the right end, and iron railings. It follows a double-depth plan with a hallway on the left side and a transverse dogleg staircase.

The house is two storeys high with a basement, and has three windows on each first floor. Architectural details include a first-floor band, full-height end pilasters with decorative capitals, a crowning frieze, cornice, and blocking course. It has 6/6 sash windows throughout, set in plain reveals with sills. The left-hand entrance features a renewed flight of five steps leading to a five-panel door with an overlight that has margin lights. The interior was not inspected.

The gate and railings on either side of the steps and area have arrowhead bars and dog bars with urn finials to the stanchions. Blind boxes remain at the ground- and first-floor window positions.

Historically, the house was part of the north side of Portland Square. It forms a group with numbers 2, 4, and 8-30 (even), Albert Place.
