Description
This is a terrace of six houses, numbered 18 to 33, built around 1839-40 as part of a larger development on Prestbury Road, Cheltenham. The houses were designed for Joseph Pitt and the overall layout was by the architect John Forbes. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with concealed roof and brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks.
The houses are two storeys high and have 16 plus 1 first-floor windows; the left-hand house projects slightly, and the right-hand house has a curved end. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, voussoirs over the window and door openings (except the left-hand house), a continuous first-floor band, and a crowning entablature. Most windows are original 6/6 sashes; some have 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes (at numbers 18 and 24), all set in plain reveals with sills. Basement windows are mainly 8/8, 3/6, or 6/6 sashes. The left-hand house has a distyle Doric porch, while the other houses have flights of roll-edged steps leading to three-panel doors with overlights, some of which have margin lights. The interiors have not been inspected.
Attached arrowhead-shaped iron forecourt railings extend to numbers 20, 24 and 26, and flank the steps. Window boxes at the ground floor near the right-hand end of the terrace are decorated with a scroll motif, and urn finials adorn the stanchions.
