Description

Sligo House is a villa built between 1839 and 1840, originally by Edward Cope. It is located on Wellington Road in Cheltenham, having previously stood on Prestbury Road. The exterior is stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and two rear stacks of stucco.

The villa is two storeys high with a basement, featuring three windows on the first floor. Stucco detailing includes tooled architraves to the ground floor windows, with broken segmental pediments on corbel brackets, a first-floor sill band, and a wreath above each first-floor window. A crowning cornice sits on paired console brackets. All windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills, except for the basement which has renewed 8/8 sashes. The central entrance has a flight of five renewed roll-edged steps leading to a four-raised-and-fielded-panel door with sidelights and a divided overlight, all within a tooled architrave. The left return features three first-floor windows, with one set forward and one in a full-height bow. The bow windows have curved panes and matching stucco detailing.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters.

To either side of the steps are stuccoed balustrades incorporating a blind oval motif, with cylindrical end piers.

The north west side of Prestbury Road was developed for Joseph Pitt between 1835 and 1842, with a layout designed by John Forbes. Edward Cope, a local builder and speculator, built the villa, which was sold in 1847 to John Bird of the East India Company. It was originally known as Alwington Villa.

Sligo House forms part of a notable group of villas including Southend House, Tower House, and numbers 1 and 2, Pittville Circus, situated at the junction of Prestbury Road, Wellington Road, Albert Road, and Pittville Circus.
