Numbers 41 And 43 And Attached Area Railings

Numbers 41 and 43 Prestbury Road are a pair of terraced houses, now converted into flats, dating to around 1840, with later additions including attic conversions dating to approximately 1960. The houses are built of stucco over brick, with slate roofs and stucco chimney stacks. They are flanked by iron area railings.

The houses are two storeys with attics and a basement. Number 41 has one window on the first floor, while Number 43 has four, and the left-hand end is curved. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs over alternate openings and at the left end, a first-floor band, and a crowning architrave. The windows are primarily 6/6 sashes, with one 8/8 sash; all are in plain reveals and with sills. The basement windows are a mix of 3/6 and 2/4 sashes. Dormers with casements are present in the attic level. The rear of the properties retains 6/6 and 3/6 sashes. A raised, stepped, and flattened gable end is visible at the left-hand side.

The interior of Number 43 retains a dogleg staircase with stick balustrade and a wreathed handrail. The interior of Number 41 was not inspected.

The area railings and gates feature two levels of arrowhead bars and dogbars, with anthemions to the stanchions. The property includes renewed tent-roofed porches. The houses were not shown on Merrett’s Map of 1834 and form a group with and abut Numbers 37 and 39, Prestbury Road.
