Description

Number 4 and the attached area railings are a terraced house built around 1827, originally laid out for Albert Hughes. The house features stucco over brick with a concealed roof and a right end stack, along with cornice detailing and iron railings with a gate. It has a double depth plan, with a hallway on the left side and a transverse dogleg staircase.

The exterior consists of two storeys with a basement and two first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication on the ground floor, a cornice above, end pilasters, a low parapet with copings, and end acroteria. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, set in plain reveals with sills. There is a flight of five renewed steps leading to the left entrance, which features a six-panel door with an overlight that has oval glazing bars.

The interior has not been inspected. The subsidiary features include a gate and railings to the area and sides of the steps, which have arrowhead bars and dogbars, with an anthemion motif on the stanchions. Historically, this building was part of the north side of Portland Square and forms a group with Nos. 2, 6, and 8-30 (even) on Albert Place.
