Description

Number 2 and the attached railings are two terraced houses, currently used as offices, built around 1820-1825. They are depicted on the Post Office Map of 1820 and have undergone some later alterations. The buildings feature a stucco exterior over brick with a slate roof and a tall reddish-brown brick party-wall stack with a cornice. The iron area railings add to the overall aesthetic.

The exterior consists of three storeys above a basement, with three first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes bands at the first and second floors, a crowning frieze, cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are primarily 6/6 sashes, larger on the first floor and fitted with sills, while the ground floor has three 8-pane French windows. The basement includes a plank door and a three-light window.

The entrance to Number 2 is located on the left, featuring a flight of roll-edged steps leading to double 4-panel doors set within a Doric pilastered surround that includes a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The right return has three storeys above a basement and three first-floor windows, with the left end being taller. It has a plinth and stucco detailing that includes a first-floor band and a continuous second-floor sill band at the left and centre. The off-centre left entrance has steps leading to 6-panel double doors in a pilastered surround with a hood on corbel brackets, an overlight with sunburst glazing bars, and an architrave above. The left side features 6/6 sashes, while the centre has two tripartite windows with 4/4 between 2/2 sashes, and the right side has a full-height canted bay with two 6/6 sashes in front of 2/2 sashes.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters, though it has not been fully inspected. The subsidiary features include lancet railings on the sides of the steps and in the forecourt, topped with urn finials on the stanchions. This property forms a group with the John Dower House on Crescent Place and Number 42 on Clarence Street.
