Description

Bank House (Number 45) is a group of four houses, now shops with flats and offices above, dating to around 1810-1830. A mid-19th century shop front was added to Number 49, with 20th-century alterations elsewhere. The construction is stucco over brick, with concealed roofs and brick party-wall stacks. The buildings are double depth, incorporating side stairhalls.

The exterior is four storeys high, with twelve first-floor windows (three per house). Number 45 occupies a corner site and has a curved right end. Stucco detailing includes horizontal bands on the first and second floors, and a frieze to Numbers 49 and 51, with cornices to a low parapet. The first and second floors have windows with 6/6 sashes, the first floor windows being taller. The third floor has 3/3 sashes, with the centre openings to Numbers 45 and 49 being blind. All the windows are set in plain reveals with sills. Number 49 features a left-hand entrance with a pilastered surround and overlight, with one pilaster shared with a glazed shop front. The shop front has windows that cant towards the entrance and double glazed doors, incorporating three fluted Ionic pilasters with wreaths and columnette mullions. The right return has a three-window range; the first floor features a bow window, with a 6/6 sash flanked by 4/4 sashes, and other windows with 6/6 and 3/3 sashes, and blind windows.

The interior has not been inspected. Bank House appeared on Merrett’s Map of 1834. Number 45 forms a group with Numbers 5 and 6 Well Walk and Number 7 Well Walk. Number 51 was listed separately in 1972.
