Description
No. 42 Clarence Street, formerly known as Carr's Hotel, is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built around 1820-1825 and is depicted as laid out but not constructed on the Post Office Map of 1820. The building underwent restorations in 1995. It features stucco over brick with a concealed roof, brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks, and iron railings.
The exterior consists of two storeys with three bays, the right bay canted to full height and the left bay curved on plan. The stucco detailing includes first- and second-floor plat-bands and a crowning entablature with a blocking course. The ground, first, and second floors primarily have 6/6 sash windows, with the first-floor windows being taller. The centre windows on the first and second floors are tripartite, consisting of a 4/4 window between two 2/2 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance is located in the second bay, featuring steps leading to 6-panel double doors with a hood and an overlight with glazing bars. There is a two-window range on the left return. The interior has not been inspected.
