Description
This is a terrace of seven houses numbered 53 to 65, with attached railings to numbers 55, 59, 61, 63, and 65, built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are constructed with stucco over brick, with a slate roof, brick party wall stacks, and have iron railings. The design is two storeys plus a basement, with 21 first-floor windows (three per house), with the end bays set back. A central breakforward features a pediment, and there are service ranges to the rear. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs above the openings, a first-floor band, a crowning frieze, architrave, and cornice (missing on the left side), along with a blocking course and copings. The windows are mostly 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills; the second window from the left is blind, and the basement windows are a mix of 3/6 and 8/8 sashes. The right-hand entrances are accessed by flights of steps leading to four-panel doors with overlights featuring margin lights, with the right-hand entrance recessed within a distyle porch with Doric pillars. The rear of the houses retains many original 6/6 windows. The interior is noted to retain original joinery, including panelled shutters to the windows, though it has not been fully inspected. The iron railings to the sides of the steps are largely composed of bars and dog-bars, with some X-motifs; area railings to numbers 55, 59, 61, 63, and 65 also feature an X-motif.
