Description

Sandford Park House is probably originally two houses, now offices, dating from the 1820s and 1830s. The building is constructed of stucco over brickwork, with a concealed roof and an iron balcony and rear porch. It is three storeys high, with a basement, and has eleven first-floor windows arranged in a 3:1:3:1:3 pattern, incorporating three full-height three-window bows. Service ranges are located to the rear. A second-floor band, a crowning frieze and cornice, and a blocking course are present on the exterior. The windows are 1/1 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. The off-centre left entrance features six-panel double doors with Doric columns in antis, a frieze, and a wide fanlight. The rear entrance has a tent-roofed porch supported by web-motif brackets.

The interior includes an entrance hall with a fluted frieze and a dentil cornice, and a narrow open-well staircase with stick balusters and panels of scroll and quatrefoil ornament, with a wreathed handrail and carved tread ends. Other interior details were not inspected.

A first-floor continuous balustrade features an embellished rod motif with scroll panels and a lattice frieze. On the right return is a set-back former Doric porch, with a pulvinated frieze and dentil cornice, now containing sash windows. Historical records indicate that railings with urn finials bearing the stamps “RE” and “C Marshall” are now missing; these were documented by Chatwin. The building appeared on Merrett’s Map of 1834 as Keynsham Place.
