Description
A pair of houses, numbers 50 and 52, built around 1830 to 1860, and their attached railings. The houses are stucco-faced over brick, with a concealed roof and brick stacks topped with cornices on consoles. They have iron railings and a balcony. The houses are three storeys high with a basement, and feature six first-floor windows, with recessed two-storey entrance bays on each side. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication on the ground floor, a band above that, and quoins at the corners. The first-floor windows have tooled architraves, panelled aprons, and sills with decorative feet. A crowning frieze and cornice tops the building, above a low parapet with panels to the side ranges. The windows are mostly 1/1 and 2/2 sashes. The entrances have flights of steps with panelled stucco walls leading to four-panel doors with fanlights and tooled arches above, featuring imposts with acanthus keystones. The returns have full-height canted bays and round-arched staircase windows with 6/6 sashes and radial glazing to the top. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. A balcony on the ground floor has ornate balusters set within stucco plinths. The area railings to the returns have X-shaped motifs. The design is similar to numbers 54 and 56 London Road. They share group value with numbers 3 to 19 (odd) and 4 to 18 (even) Sydenham Villas Road.
