Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, numbers 4 and 6, dating from around 1826-30, are constructed with stucco over brickwork. They have hipped slate roofs, with a replacement section on the left side, and stucco party-wall stacks. The buildings are arranged with a double-depth plan, incorporating side halls and full-height service ranges at the rear.

The exterior features horizontal rustication to the ground floor, with flat arches above the openings. A band defines the first floor, and the first-floor windows are set within tooled, elliptically-arched architraves with sills on feet. A moulded band and wide eaves, supported by console brackets with incised panels, crown the building. The first floor has 2/2 horizontal-pane, elliptically-arched sash windows, while the ground floor has 1/1 horned sashes, all in plain reveals.

The entrances are located at the ends of the villas, with flights of steps leading to set-back doors. These doors consist of three panels; the upper panels are glazed and raised and fielded, and the lower panels are flush, accompanied by side-lights and an overlight. The rear of the property retains 6/6 sash windows. The returns have tall 2/2 horizontal-pane staircase sashes.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters, though the remainder of the interior has not been inspected. A continuous balcony runs along the ground floor and features alternately embellished and scrolled ironwork. Similar iron railings are present on the sides of the steps, with a wreathed handrail. Numbers 3-19 (odd) and 4-18 (even) form a group.
