Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, numbers 12 and 14, were built around 1826 to 1830. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and a brick and stucco party-wall stack. The houses are part of a larger group, originally including numbers 3 to 19 (odd) and 4 to 18 (even) on Sydenham Villas Road.

The exterior displays stucco detailing, including horizontal rustication to the ground floor with flat arches above the openings, a first-floor band, and a crowning moulded band with wide eaves supported by brackets with incised panels. First-floor windows have tooled, elliptically-arched architraves with sills on feet. The entrances, at each end, feature flights of four roll-edged steps leading to recessed three-panel doors. The upper panels of these doors are raised and fielded, the lower panels are flush, and each door has side-lights and an overlight. Tall, two-over-two horizontal-pane sash windows are found on the returns.

Inside, the houses retain original joinery including panelled shutters. The interior beyond this was not inspected.

The attached railings have embellished rods and a wreathed handrail to the sides of the steps. A continuous ground-floor balcony features alternate embellished rods.
