Description

Numbers 2, 2A and 2B, and attached area railings are a group of terraced houses, originally designed around 1827, likely for John Hughes. They were probably built as part of the north side of Portland Square and have undergone later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed in ashlar stone over brick, with a slate roof. They have tall stuccoed brick end stacks topped with cornices and iron railings. The design employs a double-depth plan with a central hallway.

The houses are two storeys high, with a basement level, and have five windows on the first floor. The ashlar detailing includes three incised lines on the first floor, a crowning frieze and cornice finished with a blocking course, and pilasters on either side of the front door, decorated with an incised Greek key motif and an open pediment. There are blind openings to the left at ground and first floor levels, and in the centre of the first floor. The remaining windows are 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals, with sills. A central entrance has a flight of five steps leading to a door consisting of five panels, with the upper panels raised and fielded, accompanied by a fanlight featuring batwing and circle-patterned glazing bars. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

The attached area railings, to the sides of the steps, have arrowhead bars and dogbars, with anthemions adorning the stanchions. These houses form a group with numbers 4, 6, 8-30 (even) of Albert Place, and with numbers 37 and 39 Prestbury Road.
