Description

Numbers 8 to 30 and attached area railings form an irregular terrace of twelve houses, laid out circa 1827 for Joseph Hughes, and originally part of the north side of Portland Square. The houses are constructed of ashlar and stucco over brick, with slate and mock-slate roofs, and brick and stucco party-wall stacks. They are double-depth, with a transverse dogleg staircase, and number 18 has a full-height service range to the rear.

The houses are two storeys high, with basements, and most have attics to the rear. They have a 35-window front, with 2 windows to number 28 and 3 windows to each of the others. The windows are generally 6/6 sashes, although numbers 14 and 30 have 2 x 1/1 sashes to the ground floor. Some blind openings are present at numbers 10 and 22, number 8 has blind boxes, and number 28 has a floating cornice to the ground floor. The entrances are accessed by mainly roll-edged flights of steps, leading to mainly 6-panel doors with fanlights, some of which retain batwing-and-circle glazing-bars. Number 18 has an Ionic pilastered surround and broken pediment. Detailing includes three continuous incised first-floor bands, except to numbers 6 and 28, end pilasters with decorative capitals, a continuous frieze and cornice, and a blocking course. Number 30 has a balustrade surmounted by urns.

The rear of the properties has a mix of 8/8, 6/6, and 3/6 sashes. Numbers 12, 20, and 26 have a tall staircase window with margin-lights. Internally, original joinery, including panelled shutters to some windows, remain.

The attached area railings have bars and dog-bars, with arrow- and spearheaded detailing, and some anthemion finials. The properties abut and form a group with numbers 2, 4, and 6, Albert Place, and numbers 35 and 37 Prestbury Road.
