Description
Numbers 25 to 30, and 25A, with attached railings, form a terrace of six houses, now used as houses and flats, dating from approximately 1828 to 1832, with later additions and alterations. The construction is predominantly pinkish-brown brick, with a painted stucco facade, and a Welsh slate roof accented by cast-iron railings.
The terrace is four storeys high with basements; numbers 27 and 30 include attics. There are 14 first-floor windows arranged in a 3:3:2:2:2:2 pattern. The ground floor features rustication, and the house on the left (number 25) is distinguished by Doric pilasters extending through the first and second floors, together with a frieze. The first floor windows are mainly 8-pane French windows with margin lights, with the exception of number 27, which has 4/4 sash windows with margin lights. Most windows are set within tooled architraves, though this feature is partly remaining at number 27 and absent at number 28. The second floor features 3/6 sash windows with sills, again mostly within tooled architraves except at number 28. A continuous cornice and frieze extends around the terrace, with a deeper cornice to the right-hand four houses. The third floor incorporates 2/2, 3/3, and 3/6 sash windows, similarly within tooled architraves except at number 28. A cornice and blocking course are present on the right-hand four houses. The ground floor has steps leading to side entrances with panelled doors, some part-glazed, all contained within distyle Roman Doric porches displaying engaged plain pilasters, a frieze primarily composed of triglyphs, and many possessing modillion cornices. The ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills, with numbers 25 and 26 featuring flat, rusticated arches and raised keystones. Basement windows are a mix of part-glazed doors and 8/8 and 3/6 sashes. Roof dormers are visible on numbers 27, 29, and 30, and end stacks are present. The interior of the properties was not inspected.
Subsidiary features include area lancet railings and railings flanking the steps throughout the terrace. The terrace is part of the larger Clarendon Square, which was laid out around 1828 to plans by PF Robinson, an architect of Brook Street, Mayfair. The houses were completed around 1832, and the gardens within the square were planted with trees in May 1830.
