Description

Magnolia House and Binswood Lawn, now two separate houses, were built in 1824 and subsequently altered. Designed by Peter Frederick Robinson, a pupil of Henry Holland, for Mr Willes, they are constructed from brick with painted stucco facades and have a Welsh slate roof. The architectural style is Swiss.

The houses are two storeys with two first-floor windows each. The left bay projects and both sections have gabled fronts. The ground floor features two canted bays, with the right bay extending to the full height of the building. The bay windows have three-light mullion and transom windows with single-lights on either side. The first floor has three-light mullion and transom windows set within plain reveals and incorporating hoodmoulds. All windows have chamfered sills. A gable on the left side features a blind niche with a hoodmould. Decorative bargeboards are present on the gables, and there are diamond-shaped roof stacks. An entrance is located on the left side, at the rear, while a partially glazed door is on the right return.

The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

Magnolia House and Binswood Lawn are part of a complete square of stucco terraces, Clarendon Square, which was laid out according to plans by Peter Frederick Robinson. The houses were completed around 1832; the gardens within the square were planted with trees in May 1830.
