Description

A pair of semi-detached villas dating from approximately 1828 to 1834, with later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with stucco to the front and side facades, with the front of number 25 being painted. They have a Welsh slate roof, cast-iron verandahs with a lead roof, and brass hardware.

The villas are three storeys high with a basement, and feature a four-window range on the first floor, with recessed, two-storey single-window entrance bays to either side. Quoins run the full height of the main range of the right-hand dwelling (number 25).

The first floor has 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with moulded architraves and sills resting on plain corbels. The side range has a casement window to the left, and a 2/2 sash window in a moulded architrave with a sill to the right. The second floor has 3/6 sash windows in plain reveals, with tooled, eared architraves and sills. The ground floor of the main range features 6/9 full-height sash windows with tooled, eared architraves. The side bays have 4-panel doors. Square Tuscan pillars support a further first-floor extension to the right. Basement windows are 8/8 sashes. The design incorporates a stepped frieze, cornice, a blocking course, and copings. A verandah extends from the entrance range across the front, supported by latticed columns and featuring an anthemion-on-rod balustrade. A door to the right has a lion knocker and bell pull. The end and centre stacks have cornices.

The interior features openwell staircases with alternate stick and rod-with-central-bobbin balusters, and a wreathed handrail. Within number 25, the front room has a marble fireplace, a cornice with a grape motif, and shutters to the windows. Some four-panel doors remain.

Binswood Avenue was laid out around 1828, and the houses were completed by 1834. Numbers 1 to 29 (odd) Binswood Avenue form an architectural group.
