Description

Arnold Lodge is a pair of semi-detached villas, now serving as a school, built around 1834 with later additions and alterations. The structure features pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, a painted stucco facade, a Welsh slate roof, and a cast-iron verandah.

The exterior consists of two and three storeys with a basement, and there are seven first-floor windows. The two windows on the left are in two storeys, and the first bay on the left is recessed with an added greenhouse on the ground floor. The first floor has 2/2 sash windows throughout, each with eared and moulded surrounds and sills. Above this, the second floor has 2/2 fixed light windows in similar surrounds. The ground floor features four steps leading to entrances below the second and seventh windows, which are part-glazed, fielded-panel doors with fanlights (blocked to the left) set within doorcases that have Tuscan pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. The greenhouse has casement windows, while the rest of the ground floor includes four-pane French windows with overlights. The basement has casement windows as well. A blocking course is topped with five urns, and to the right, the ground floor verandah has a balustrade with a two-rod-and-anthemion motif.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Binswood Avenue was laid out around 1828, and the houses to the west were completed by 1834. Nos. 31-45 (odd) Binswood Avenue form an architectural group along with No. 13 Kenilworth Road.
