Description

Number 21 and its attached wall date from approximately 1828 to 1834, with later additions and alterations, particularly to the rear in the late 19th century. The house is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in an English Garden Wall bond, with a painted stucco front facade, a Welsh slate roof, cast-iron dressings, and a lead roof to the porch and verandah.

The house is two storeys with a two-window front, with a single-storey recessed entrance bay to the right and an adjoining screen wall. The entrance has a four-panel door set within a porch with latticed piers and a tent roof, topped with a frieze, cornice and blocking course. The ground floor windows are tall 6/9 sashes with plain reveals, while a continuous verandah features three latticed columns and a tent roof. The first floor has 6/6 sashes with plain reveals, sills, louvred shutters, a frieze, cornice and a low parapet, with an end stack.

The interior has not been inspected.

The attached screen wall features a plank door and a low parapet.

Binswood Avenue was laid out around 1828, and the houses to the west were built before 1834. Number 21 forms an architectural group with numbers 1 to 29 (odd) on Binswood Avenue.
