Description

Numbers 52 and 54 are a pair of semi-detached villas with attached walls, built around 1834, and later altered, including the addition of an attic around 1900. The construction incorporates pinkish-brown brick, a painted stucco facade, and a Welsh slate roof.

The villas are two storeys with a basement, and the right-hand villa has an attic. There are nine first-floor windows arranged in a four-window to five-window pattern. The centre of each house projects and is gabled, whilst the ends are recessed, with the walls joining at each end. The first floor features six-over-six sash windows within moulded architraves, complete with sills. The ground floor entrances are located at the angles of the gabled ranges. To the left, there are seven roll-edged steps leading to a four-panel door with three-pane sidelights, topped by a continuous overlight with glazing bars, all set within a round-arched porch featuring a cornice and blocking course. To the right, steps lead to a partially glazed door under a Doric porch with two pillars and two columns, along with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The attic has casement windows, and the basement contains four-over-eight sashes.

The interior of Number 52 includes a narrow openwell staircase with turned balusters and a wreathed handrail, and a modillion cornice to the hall. The attached screen walls feature a round-arched opening on the left and an elliptically-arched opening on the right.

Binswood Avenue was laid out around 1828. Numbers 50 to 60 (even) on Binswood Avenue, along with Number 8 Kenilworth Road and Number 3 Arlington Avenue constitute an architectural group.
