Description

Beauchamp Lodge and attached railings is a villa built between 1828 and 1838, likely designed by William Thomas. The building is made of brick with a painted stucco facade and features a Welsh slate roof, along with a cast-iron verandah and railings.

The exterior consists of two storeys and three bays, with the outer bays canted to full height. It has a basement and attics in the gables, and a two-storey entrance bay that is recessed to the right. On the first floor, there is a moulded band, and 1/1 sash windows throughout, which are narrower on the sides of the bays. All windows have horns and are set in plain reveals with tooled architraves and sills. The building has a cornice on consoles and a parapet with balusters.

On the ground floor, the canted bays contain tall 1/1 sashes with horns, again narrower on the sides. In the center, there are six roll-edged steps leading to four-pane French windows with divided overlights. The entrance bay to the right has five roll-edged steps leading to an eight fielded-panel door with a cambered overlight, set in a moulded architrave and flanked by a distyle fluted Doric screen that connects to No. 29 Beauchamp Avenue. The building has tall paired end stacks and a concealed basement at the front, with 3/3 sashes on the left return and 6/6 sashes on the left side. The ground floor verandah features a decorative double-rod-with-anthemion-and-paterae design on the uprights and frieze.

The railings beside the steps display a double-rod-and-paterae motif. Beauchamp Avenue was developed around 1828 to 1831, with most houses on the north side completed by 1838. Beauchamp Lodge occupies a corner site and is part of an architectural group with Nos 29, 31, and 33 Beauchamp Avenue.
