Description
37 Beauchamp Avenue is a villa built around 1831 by William Thomas. It features pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade, a Welsh slate roof, and a cast-iron verandah. The building has a central hallway plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, displaying a three-window range.
The entrance has a segmental-headed opening with a tooled architrave, leading to a part-glazed, four-panel door set between margin-lights and topped with an overlight. The ground floor includes tripartite French windows with eight panes between four, and blind boxes. The first floor has a cornice, with 2/2 sash windows that have Venetian shutters and boxes supported by slender pilasters and cornices. Decorative elements include a dentil, egg-and-dart, and modillion cornice, along with a blocking course featuring pilaster strips. A roof dormer with a casement window is also present. The continuous ground floor verandah is supported by slender turned columns.
The interior has not been inspected. Beauchamp Avenue was developed as Beauchamp Terrace around 1828-1831, with most of the north side completed by 1838. This villa is part of an architectural group that includes Nos 27-35, 39, and 41 Beauchamp Avenue.
