Description
Numbers 10 and 12 are a pair of terraced houses built around 1820-34. They were shown as built on a map of 1834, but were not present on an earlier map from 1820. The houses are constructed of stucco over brick, with concealed roof and brick end and party-wall stacks topped with cornices. They are accompanied by iron railings and balconies.
The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan and feature two storeys over basements, with five windows on the first floor. Stucco detailing includes plat bands at the first and second floors, a crowning frieze and cornice, and a blocking course. Original windows are 6/6 sashes, although some have been replaced with 1/1 sashes; the first-floor windows are taller. The basement windows are 8/8 and 3/6 sashes. The left-hand entrances have six-fielded-panel doors, with fanlights featuring radial glazing, in plain reveals.
The rear elevations are more elaborately decorated, with three storeys and a 1:3:3 window arrangement on the first floor. Number 12, the left-hand bay, projects forward and has a 6/6 sash window on both the ground and first floors, followed by three 3/6 sashes with radial glazing to the heads, and slender Doric pilasters. The first-floor band and similar pilasters are positioned between 2/2 sashes with margin-lights and iron latticework 'aprons'. The ground floor has a "loggia" with French windows and an overlight. A recessed nine-pane window with margin-lights and a fanlight is positioned centrally. The off-centre entrance features a six-panel, part-glazed door with sidelights and an overlight.
Number 10 also projects forward and has paired pilasters to either side of the right-hand window. The first floor has 2/2 sashes with margin lights, while the second floor holds 6/6 and 1/1 horned sashes. Similar latticework 'aprons' are present below the windows. The ground floor to the left is recessed and includes trellis and a sunburst 'arch' above a casement window. The right-hand entrance is a glazed door with an overlight.
The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
The attached features include area spearhead railings and gates with urns to the stanchions. First-floor balconies feature embellished rods and central scroll panels. The property also has scrolled boot scrapers.
