Description
Number 3 is a terraced house dating from approximately 1820 to 1834, appearing on Merrett’s Map of 1834 but not on the Post Office Map of 1820. It sits within an irregular terrace with numbers 1 and 2, and 4, Berkeley Street. The house is constructed of brick with a stucco façade, topped by a mansard slate roof and stucco end stacks. It has a double-depth plan.
The exterior is three storeys plus a basement and attics, with three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, a first-floor band, tall Ionic pilasters extending through the first and second floors to the ends and between windows, a frieze, architrave and cornice, finishing with a blocking course. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, with taller sashes on the first floor set within tooled architraves with cornices. All windows are in plain reveals, and there are two dormer windows. The left-hand entrance is a three-panel door with side-lights and overlight, set within a solid Tuscan porch. The rear elevation has 8/8 sashes, some with margin-lights.
The interior contains original joinery, but has not been fully inspected. External features include individual balconies to the first-floor windows, featuring a web motif supplied by the Carron Company and shown in their 1823/4 catalogue; this design is repeated at Nos 15 and 17 Rodney Road. The area railings have a lattice motif, with stick balusters to the basement.
