Description

Numbers 31, 33, and 35 form a terrace of three houses with attached railings to number 31, dating from around 1824 to 1836, and incorporating later alterations. The houses are built of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, with painted stucco facades to the two houses on the left. They have Welsh slate roofs and cast-iron railings.

The houses are arranged over two unequal storeys with a basement, presenting an 8-window first-floor arrangement of 2:4:2. The first floor features a mix of sash windows, including 6/6, 1/1, 8/8 and 3/6 sizes, all set within rusticated flat arches with raised keystones. Ground floor entrances include a part-glazed, 4-panel door with stained glass overlight in a pilastered surround with a Gothick frieze and cornice; a central 6-panel door with overlight in a Tuscan pilastered surround with an entablature; and a further 4-panel, part-glazed door in a pilastered surround. Canted bays with casements are present to the left; the central houses have two canted bays rising from the basement with 2/2 and 1/1 sashes; and the right-hand house has an 8/8 sash within a rusticated arch with a raised keystone. Basement windows are 3/3 sashes, largely concealed. The building has ridge and end stacks.

The interior was not inspected during the listing process. Stick baluster railings are attached to the basement steps on the left-hand side. Portland Street itself was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
