Description

The VAD Ladies Club is a corner block of four terraced townhouses that have been combined into a single club premises, dating from around 1800 as part of the Portman Estate development. The building is constructed of multicoloured stock brick with channelled stucco ground floors and features concealed slate roofs, except for the northernmost house which has a visible roof. It stands four storeys high with a basement and has an added dormered mansard roof on the northernmost former house. The façades are three windows wide, and the doorways have been altered to windows, with the main entrance located on the Upper Berkeley Street front, featuring a Tuscan columned stucco porch. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches. A plat band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, while crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses adorn the top. The first floor includes cast iron window guards and a full-width bracketed balcony on the former corner house. Additionally, there are cast iron urn finialed area railings on both fronts. This building is included for its group value only.
