Description
35A Great Cumberland Place is a terraced town house built around 1789-90, possibly designed by William Porden as part of a development for the Portman Estate. This was originally intended to be a complete circus or double crescent, but only the eastern half was constructed. The building is made of stock brick with channelled stucco on the ground floor, and it has a concealed slate roof. It stands four storeys high, with a basement, and features a two-window front, along with a five-window return to Upper Berkeley Street where the entrance is located.
The house has a semicircular arched doorway to the right with a panelled door and fanlight. The other houses in the row, Nos. 29 to 33, have mid-19th century stucco surrounds, while No. 35 retains its original patterned fanlight. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches. The ground floor stucco work is finished with plat bands, and there are stringcourses on the second and third floors, topped by a main entablature with a bold dentil cornice over the third floor. A crowning cornice and blocking course complete the top.
No. 35 is highlighted as a pavilion in the formerly symmetrical terrace, featuring four thin Ionic pilasters on the first and second floors. No. 35A has a plain front with a cornice and blocking course. Original cast iron geometric patterned balconies are present on the first floor, with individual balconettes for No. 35A. The area is enclosed with cast iron railings topped with urn finials, and Nos. 29, 33, and 35 have elegant wrought iron lamp brackets and link extinguishers.
