Description

Priory Lawn is a villa, now a club, dating from circa 1790-1820, with a probable extension in the 1820s and a further single-storey extension added in 1958. The original structure is stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and stucco end stacks. It is built in a Picturesque Gothic style. The building follows a double-depth plan, with the rear range taller and including a stairwell on the right return.

The exterior presents a symmetrical facade of two storeys with a 1:3:1 window arrangement, the outer bays set back slightly. Stucco detailing includes tooled architraves to windows, each topped with a hood mould. A plinth runs along the base. The ground floor features a central canted bay with 3- and 2-light ogeed windows. Other ground floor windows are 2-light, ogeed, straight-headed casement windows, also with hood moulds. A former entrance, now blocked but retaining a similar ogee-headed surround, is on the right, while the current entrance is on the left and features a 20th-century door with an overlight. Wide eaves are present. The rear elevation has a full-height bow on the right return. On the right return is another blocked and ogeed opening, also with a straight-headed hood mould, and a 6/6 round-arched staircase window. A 6/6 sash window, with radial glazing bars to the head, is also visible.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters and 6-panel doors; a dogleg staircase with rod and bobbin balusters and a wreathed handrail; plasterwork in the hall, featuring acanthus modillions and fleurons; and a ballroom at the rear with an egg-and-dart and c-scroll frieze and a ceiling rose. The front section of the interior has simple cornices, while the cellar contains Regency fireplaces. Priory Lawn occupies a prominent site fronting London Road, a major approach road into Cheltenham.
